Safety standards certificate in Ontario
Buying or selling a used car in Ontario means the vehicle needs a safety standards certificate before it can be plated in the new owner's name. We do the full Ontario car safety inspection at our North York shop, walk you through anything that doesn't pass, and quote the repairs before we touch a thing.
What gets inspected
An Ontario safety inspection follows the province's minimum standards. Here's what we go through on your vehicle:
- Brakes: pads, rotors, drums, lines, hoses and parking brake
- Tires: tread depth, uneven wear, sidewall damage and rating
- Steering and suspension: ball joints, tie rods, shocks and springs
- Lights and electrical: headlights, signals, brake lights and horn
- Body and structure: rust perforation in critical areas, doors, mirrors and glass
- Exhaust, fuel system and fluid leaks
- Seat belts, wipers, washers and defroster
Why vehicles fail
Brakes and tires are behind most failures we see. None of these are surprises once the car is on the hoist:
- Brake pads or rotors worn past the minimum allowed thickness
- Tires below 1.5 mm of tread, or mismatched and damaged tires
- Worn ball joints, tie rod ends or leaking shocks
- Burnt-out bulbs and cracked or badly pitted windshields in the wiper path
- Rust perforation on frame rails, rockers or suspension mounting points
- Exhaust leaks and torn CV or steering boots
Transferring a vehicle in Ontario
- A safety standards certificate is required to register a used vehicle in your name with plates in Ontario.
- The certificate is valid for 36 days from the date of inspection.
- It confirms the vehicle met the minimum standards on the day it was inspected — it is not a warranty or a guarantee of condition.
- You'll also need the vehicle ownership, a bill of sale and, in most cases, proof of insurance at ServiceOntario.
- Vehicles being registered as "unfit" do not need a certificate until they're made roadworthy.
